Cyclist Coach Athlete Writer Bike Mechanic
I have been a cyclist for as long as I can remember. Even now, I take pride in the fact that I got my stabilisers off before my older brother.
As a child I rode a bike for the same reason as every other child since the invention of the bicycle – because bikes are fun. The sense of freedom that comes from flying along by the power of your pedalling is unparalleled.
As a teenager and into my twenties, I rode a bike for transport. My bike got me to college and then around university.
As an adult I rode a bike for challenge and competition. First I wanted to go further. I rode sportives, I cycled Lands End to John O’ Groats, I rode the Etape Du Tour and the Raid Alpine. Then I wanted to go faster. I raced Time Trials, Criteriums and Road Races. Then I became a mother. For a short while I forgot I was a cyclist, but I quickly found that cycling was a part of what made me who I am, and that I couldn’t be me without cycling. I wanted to cycle as much as ever. But I wanted more than that, I wanted to enable others to ride bikes and then to ride bikes well.
I want others to know the freedom and joy that can come from cycling. I want others to have the confidence to ride for fun and for transport and for challenge. I became a coach and a ride leader so that I can help others to love cycling like I do.
In addition to being an experienced coach, I am a Velotech Gold qualified bike mechanic and a Level 2 Ride Leader. As a British Cycling Breeze Champion I lead regular free, women only rides, advertised through the Lets Ride website. I also work for Scottish Cycling as a Breeze Area Coordinator and I tutor Ride Leader courses for British Cycling.
Road cycling is my first love although I think all forms of cycling are equally wonderful. I ride a cargo bike on a daily basis for transport with my children. I race criteriums and road races, and I occasionally head out on a Mountain bike.
I also write a blog about my cycling world; Mummy’s Gone A Cycle
